Everyone is talking about the ease and usefulness of Thompson's Scope and Sequence. See for yourself why teachers are wanting this tool.
Thompson's Scope and Sequence is a tool designed to assist teachers with implementing a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is intentional and effective. The Scope and Sequence is organized using Discipline Areas (Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Fine Motor, Gross Motor, and Music) and months of a school year (September - May). The sequential order of developmental milestones is a guide for teachers to ensure children are fully grasping the skills and concepts embedded within each month before moving forward. It is suggested that teachers use the Scope and Sequence to plan activities for each learning center or transition, for example under Language Arts, a concept is practice purposeful listening skills, the activity could be planned during a transition from learning centers to circle time. The teacher will intentionally plan for 2-step directions to be given and followed through by the children.
The Scope and Sequence has companion tools to assist teachers when evaluating children. The ECE Today Assessment tools are prepared for quarterly periods. The fall assessment is designed to be used as a narrative, the mid school year assessment is designed as a rating scale, and the end of the year is a cumulative checklist. These tools are also designed to accompany the Scope and Sequence for each age-level. Take a look at the Assessments on the Companion Assessment Tools page.

How to use Thompson's Scope and Sequence:
There are 8 age-levels to the Scope & Sequence ("scope"), ranging from 3 months - kindergarten. The age brackets are: 3-11 months, 12-16 months, 17-23 months, 24-29 months, 2 1/2 - 3 years, 3 1/2's (which can be used for all 3's), pre-kindergarten (4's), and kindergarten. Since there is a wide range in children's development, teachers can use more than one scope. For example, if you teach 2 1/2's, you would select the 2 1/2's-3 scope and begin your school year. At which point you determine some of your children are either below or above the the initial milestones set for the month of September. If they are below, you would want to use the 24-29 months scope and look at the end of the year to adjust your lesson plans for those children (individualized planning). If you have children who are above the milestones in September, you would move ahead within the scope and when you exhausted the scope for that age-level, you would choose the 3 1/2's to finish the school year. Therefore, it is advisable for a teacher to use two or three Scope and Sequences. The order of concepts embedded are designed to build upon each other. A child must first demonstrate mastery of that concept before moving forward.
